Dogs

This page will be for Ryker, and tributes to Lucky and Dakota, probably tributes to Kai (the greatest dog that ever lived!) and Lacey as well.

As of April 6, 2012, this page is under development (please bear with us, as we  are a new website but updating content daily!).

Here’s our handsome boy Ryker …

Hi are using WordPress for your blog platform? I’m new to the blog world but I’m trinyg to get started and set up my own. Do you need any coding expertise to make your own blog? Any help would be really appreciated!

Yes, I’m using WordPress. You can actually get started very simply using free templates and basically just filling in the blanks. Of course, if you know coding, you can do a lot more. But there are plugins available to do many things very simply for you.

The best thing to do is to just set up a free blog and work with it, and see how it goes. I’d also suggest possibly trying Blogger as well. Some people actually like it better. I use both, but I really prefer WordPress for the control I have over here. Blogger is easier to use though. People may find one or the other suits them better. Just decide which you want before you do a lot of promoting or put TOO much effort into your blog, as it’s not really easy to migrate it.

The best thing you can do if you want to learn fancier tricks is to join a forum for webmasters or bloggers. I believe WordPress has its own forum for bloggers and you can get specific questions answered there. You can try searching for instructions, but unless you are already familiar with working with webpages, etc. it can be difficult to follow some people’s instructions.

      Best of luck to you!

I too live on a double sized East End lot and would love to be able to keep 4-6 hens. Last year I kept 10 chciks in a brooder in my garage until they were large enough (feathered out enough) to take to our more rural summer home. There we built a small coop where they stayed, gave us some eggs, and then in late fall when it was time to return to the city for good, we slaughtered them and they now reside in our freezer. I believe I will do this again this year, however someday it would be so nice to be able to keep a few year round for egg production. I’ve heard of people keeping rabbits for meat production in sheds lined with cages in their yards here in SSM.

Glad your chicks worked out for you. :)

Rabbits can produce meat with very few cages. If you kept a buck and 2-3 does, you can produce a LOT of meat if they are meat breeds and produce large litters. You would need extra cages to grow out the kits. It’s possible to do with only 2 extra cages – one for the girls and one for the boys, but they would need to be large and you’d have to watch to make sure everyone gets along once introduced from different litters. If you want rows of cages in a shed, you may want to go with a slightly smaller breed (something the size of Florida Whites, maybe, instead of something the size of Californians).

Good luck with your food production!
